Veganism is going mainstream - somewhere in between religion, corporation and ideology

Like all those mentioned above, veganism includes moderates and extremists, as well as a mission through which it claims moral superiority. And boringly enough it fights for the innocent or voiceless (the one true God, the poor, the working class, or in this case animals, who - how practical-, cannot speak for themselves)

There is a lot of believe and self-righteousness involved.

Unfortunately, most vocal vegans seem not to understand how agriculture works. To grow grains or soy or vegetable, we clear the land of all "nature" (plants, trees, insects and animals get killed). Plant-based agriculture itself is not very animal-friendly.

Then, for the growing plants not to be eaten by the wrong species we spray, kill etc. again and fertilize. In many regions of the world plant-food for humans will only grow after either irrigating intensely and or building indoor facilities.

There it is much more sustainable and economical (which is not a bad thing) to eat the animals that can convert meagre grasses and scrubs into human food.

Restaurants are maybe for us here the most visible extension of the food chain but by no means an important one. Funny enough, most people do not eat every day there.

Last but not least, that a workplace, like in Toronto, Canada (see Now Magazine on Vegan-dale) can unhindered discriminate against people wearing the wrong shoes (leather), or bringing the wrong lunch to work is very dictatorial and seems fitting for an extremist cult, but should maybe not have a place in a democratic, tolerant society.
