We need to talk about Canada
Some 20 odd years ago I immigrated to Canada. Now I am even a citizen.
I like Canada. I like the multicultural aspect, and I like the landscape. I find most people very friendly.
I am always surprised though, about the somewhat distorted picture many people, Canadians and Non- Canadians have off Canada.
The History of Canada is to a big part the History of Genocide, Racism, Abuse, Discrimination, Class War and Environmental Destruction.
This history did not just end, and all that became a thing of the past.
The legacy of systematic abuse and disadvantaging of whole groups of people are to this day prevalent.
Thousands of native Girls and Women disappeared, got violated and murdered without a national outcry.
There are still whole communities in Canada without access to clean water.
Teenagers commit suicide in northern communities on a terrible scale.
We as Canadians need to take responsibility for this.
How heartless is it to justify inhuman living conditions with the referral to corrupt chiefs. Even if they would be corrupt - would we ever let the children in "white" towns suffer because the local governments are corrupt?
There are many challenges ahead, where we will need new ideas and approaches. Maybe it is time to ask our native Sisters and Brothers for help
We need to talk about Canada.
