Who did it ?
When talking about the missing and murdered indigenous women in Canada, the cultural genocide or the systematic abuse of native children in residential schools the point missing is: "Who did this?"
To build a better society, we need to confront ourselves with all these dark parts of Canada's History.
I am not throwing this out here because I am a recent immigrant. I grew up in communist Germany. There was a lot of soulsearching and trying to understand who did what after the end of communism. Germans had to look at themselves, their parents and grandparents before this, after the Nazi-years and asked the fearful question: "What did you do?"
The children here in Canada did not get robbed, beaten abused, starved and destroyed by some Alien.
A lot of people needed to look away and ignore the reports of missing and murdered women.
Nurses, Policemen, Church officials, Politician, Neighbours - we better start asking what made ordinary and influential people treat Natives as less than humans. If not, it is easy to repeat this tragedy again and again.
